American Psycho has been rejuvenated in recent years as the youngsters on social media have found the movie captivating and deemed Christian Bale's character 'sigma'. However, the movie represents the thoughts of a mentally diseased man. While the movie shall be considered as terrorizing, Gen Z idolizes the film. The ironic part is, most of the sigma enthusiasts probably haven't even seen the cinema. While the movie itself is a masterpiece, teenagers forget what the movie represents. And this is all you need to know about this generation's intellect.
American Psycho is actually a critically acclaimed film, where Christian Bale has delivered a top-notch performance. The chaotic film is extremely gory and violent. The film is too graphic, which is what makes it terrifying. However, there's another film out there that today's audience might not be aware of, American Beauty. A 1999 film that might blow your mind, starring Kevin Spacey.
While American Psycho didn't adhere to reality, American Beauty does. This is probably what makes it more eerie. One might completely relate to the film's premise, while the other might worry about their future. The story starts with Kevin Spacey narrating as his character, Lester. It shows him and his wife going through a mid-life crisis. Both of them outgrew each other and share no desire to be together. Their daughter, Jane, too, isn't a normal teenager.
The couple has been tired of their jobs too. Mentally frustrated and sexually inactive, Lester and his wife, Carolyn, would have divorced each other a long time ago if they didn't care about society and Jane. While Lester dragged his life somehow, things got interesting for him when he decided to attend an event at his daughter's school. During the show, he laid his eyes on Angela, Jane's friend. Immediately attracted to her, he found passion in things again. He started working out solely to impress her. Jane, too, started to date a neighbourhood boy. Meanwhile, Carolyn started an affair with her work-related friend, which Lester didn't care about. He had taken a different approach to life.
Quit his job and started as a drive-thru chef, which he didn't regret. He even started to forget why he started to work out, to seduce Angela. While everyone's life seems happy for now, things take a dark turn in the end. Some things haven't been mentioned in the film, so you can still enjoy the movie.
American Beauty perfectly portrayed how American marriages work now. While having a 'mid-life crisis' was rare in 1999, the phenomenon has spread worldwide over time, with couples divorcing like changing lightbulbs. This movie could be considered more eerie than American Psycho or any other horror film.
